Here's the gist with phenelzine (Nardil) and yerba mansa. The concern on file is a possible additive sedative effect, meaning the two together might leave you feeling sleepier, foggier, or more relaxed than either alone. Phenelzine on its own can already cause drowsiness and dizziness, so layering a calming herb on top could nudge that further.

I want to be honest about how soft this is: it's a theoretical interaction based on how the plant might behave, not on real human studies. That said, phenelzine is a tricky MAOI with its own food and drug cautions, so I wouldn't just wing it. Before adding yerba mansa, check with your doctor or pharmacist, and go easy on driving until you know how you feel.

What Is Phenelzine Used For?

Brand name: Nardil

Phenelzine is used to treat depression — specifically the types described as atypical, nonendogenous, or neurotic depression. This often includes people who have a mix of anxiety and depression, or who have phobic or hypochondriacal features (strong fears about illness or physical symptoms).

It is generally not the first antidepressant a doctor will try. It is best suited for patients who have already tried other antidepressants without enough relief. There is less evidence supporting its use in severe depression with classic biological features (called endogenous depression).
