Clarithromycin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Zedoary interacts with.

Theoretically, zedoary might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In-vitro research shows that a methanol extract of zedoary strongly inhibits the CYP3A4 metabolism of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors lapatinib and sorafenib, and to a lesser extent, gefitinib.

Here's the idea with these two together. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down clarithromycin (Biaxin). In lab dish studies, compounds in zedoary appeared to slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in people, clarithromycin could clear out of your system more slowly and build up a bit higher than usual. Clarithromycin is not a prodrug, so more drug in your blood means a stronger chance of its typical side effects, things like stomach upset, nausea, a metallic taste, or diarrhea.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's purely theoretical, based only on test-tube work, not real patients. A pinch of zedoary used as a spice is very unlikely to matter. If you're thinking about concentrated zedoary supplements, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Clarithromycin

What Is Clarithromycin Used For?

Brand names: Biaxin, Biaxin XL

Clarithromycin tablets and oral suspension treat a range of mild to moderate bacterial infections in adults and children, including community-acquired pneumonia, acute sinus infections, acute bacterial flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, strep throat and tonsillitis, uncomplicated skin infections, and middle ear infections in children. Tablets are also used in adults to eliminate H. pylori bacteria (in combination with other medicines) to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.

Clarithromycin tablets — but not the extended-release tablet — are also used to treat and prevent disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in people with advanced HIV. Clarithromycin extended-release tablets are approved only for acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, and community-acquired pneumonia in adults — not for the other conditions listed above.
