What’s inside
Full disclosure
This is a straightforward single-ingredient product: burdock root extract in liquid form. Burdock is a plant root that's been used historically in food and herbal medicine.
The extract is suspended in glycerin and water as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold doesn't establish how well burdock works for any of the uses it's marketed for—acne, aging skin, breast cancer, common cold, or eczema. All of these carry a rating of insufficient reliable evidence, meaning there simply isn't enough quality research to say whether it helps or doesn't.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Burdock is generally well tolerated when eaten as a food, and it has a long history of use with few reported problems. That said, human safety data for medicinal doses are limited.
Serious allergic reactions are rare but possible, including contact dermatitis and in extreme cases anaphylaxis. A case of liver injury has been reported in someone taking an herbal tea containing burdock and other ingredients, though it's unclear if burdock alone was responsible.
Contact dermatitis—itching, redness, and fluid-filled blisters—has occurred with prolonged use of burdock root oil or plasters, sometimes appearing up to a week after application. During pregnancy, avoid medicinal amounts of burdock because there isn't safety data and it may affect the uterus.
While breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety information, so medicinal use isn't recommended. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for you if you're pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
If you take anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs—blood thinners like warfarin or anticlotting medications like aspirin—check your specific medications with the tool on this page before taking burdock. Theoretically, burdock may increase bleeding risk with these drugs, though it hasn't been confirmed in people.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Burdock has been used for a long time and is generally well tolerated, but the evidence for what it actually does for acne, skin aging, eczema, colds, or cancer isn't established yet. The main caution is with blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs—check your medications before taking this.
If you're pregnant, nursing, or have any health concerns, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
