Every active ingredient lists its own amount on the label.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 1 of its 1 active ingredient.
  • No proprietary blends here — you can verify the dose of every single component.

GABA 700 contains one active ingredient: gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a compound your brain naturally produces to help calm your nervous system. Each capsule delivers 700 mg.

The capsule itself is made from hypromellose (a plant-based material), and the formula includes ascorbyl palmitate (a form of vitamin C used as a preservative).

Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (gaba) product and its label doesn't state a use — see Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (gaba)'s own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for GABA isn't established in the data we hold. The facts list insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for anxiety, ADHD, athletic performance, chronic bronchitis, and cerebral palsy — the main reasons people take it.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work; it means the research backing these uses isn't solid enough yet to say one way or the other.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

GABA is generally well tolerated in the short term, but long-term safety hasn't been well studied, so caution is warranted if you're thinking of taking it long-term. The most common side effects reported with oral GABA are drowsiness, upset stomach, minor throat burning, muscle weakness, and nausea.

One study reported a case of temporary loss of menstrual periods in a patient taking GABA with another supplement. There isn't enough safety information for pregnancy, so you'd want to talk with your doctor before using it while pregnant.

Similarly, there's not enough data on safety while breastfeeding — your doctor or pharmacist can help you weigh the pros and cons.

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Gamma-aminobutyric Acid (gaba).
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 419 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take GABA 700, double-check any blood pressure medications (antihypertensives) you're on — GABA may lower your pressure further. Also flag any sedating drugs (CNS depressants) like sleep aids, anti-anxiety medications, or opioid pain relievers.

Your doctor or pharmacist can tell you whether GABA is a fit with your current medicines.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

GABA 700 might appeal to someone looking to support calm and relaxation, but the evidence for its effectiveness isn't established yet. If you take blood pressure medication or sedating drugs, you'll want to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this — GABA may amplify those effects.

And because long-term safety isn't well studied, this is worth discussing with your healthcare provider before you make it a regular habit.

Antihypertensive Drugs

Theoretically, taking GABA with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Some clinical research shows that GABA can decrease blood pressure in patients with hypertension.

Likelihood Possible Evidence B
Cns Depressants

Theoretically, GABA might have additive sedative effects when used in conjunction with CNS depressants. However, it is unclear if this concern is clinically relevant.
Endogenous GABA has well-established relaxant effects and GABA(A) receptors have an established physiological role in sleep. However, the effects of GABA supplements are unclear, as it is unknown whether exogenous GABA crosses the blood-brain barrier. Although there have been limited reports of drowsiness or tiredness with GABA supplements, these effects have not been widely reported in clinical studies. Additionally, intravenous GABA 0.1-1 mg/kg has been shown to induce anxiety in a dose-dependent manner.
