Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Holy Basil Leaf Extract. Holy basil, also called tulsi, is an herb traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine.
The extract is in capsule form for oral use. The inactive ingredients are cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, and rice flour — these are standard fillers and binders that hold the capsule together.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for holy basil isn't solid yet. Our data show insufficient reliable evidence to rate it for generalized anxiety, asthma, headache, respiratory tract infections, dental plaque, or diabetes.
That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means larger, higher-quality studies haven't been done to prove a benefit.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Holy basil extract is generally well tolerated in the short term, but long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects reported in studies were nausea and loose stools, though only a small number of people experienced these in a trial of 24 participants taking capsules.
During pregnancy, safety data raise animal-study concerns and human safety isn't established, so avoid use. The same applies to breastfeeding — there isn't enough reliable information to know it's safe, so it's best to skip it while nursing.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether this product is right for your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take blood thinners or antiplatelet drugs, diabetes medications, or pentobarbital (a sedative). The interactions with these are rated Moderate and could affect how your medications work or increase side effects like bleeding or low blood sugar.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Holy Basil Leaf Extract may interest you if you're exploring traditional herbal options, but evidence for specific benefits is still thin. The real catch is interactions: if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or sedatives like pentobarbital, you need to check with your doctor or pharmacist before adding this.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are off the table based on available safety data.

Holy Basil Leaf by NutriONN Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
NutriONN's Holy Basil Leaf Extract does interact with medications.
The main concern is with blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs — animal research suggests holy basil seed oil may increase bleeding risk, though we don't know if this happens in humans. The effect appears to involve slowing how platelets clump together.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
There's also a Moderate interaction with diabetes medications. Small studies show holy basil can lower fasting blood sugar, so combining it with diabetes drugs theoretically raises the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
You'd need to monitor your levels closely if you take both.
A third Moderate concern involves pentobarbital (a sedative). Animal work shows holy basil seed oil prolonged sleep time with this drug, but again, human data are absent and it's unclear whether this extends to other barbiturates or sedatives.
Altogether, these interactions span 212 individual medications. Use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions before starting.

Holy Basil Leaf Extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the risk of bleeding when used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil can prolong bleeding time, possibly due to inhibition of platelet aggregation. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, holy basil might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Small clinical studies show that taking holy basil can decrease fasting blood glucose and other measures of glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Pentobarbital (Nembutal)
Theoretically, holy basil seed oil might increase the sedative effects of pentobarbital.
Animal research shows that holy basil seed oil increases pentobarbitone-induced sleeping time. However, it is not known if this occurs in humans or if this applies to other barbiturates or sedatives.
