How safe is it?

These probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children. That said, because they contain live organisms, there is a small risk — especially in people who are very ill or have weak immune systems — that the bacteria could cross the gut barrier and cause a serious infection.
This is rare but documented in the medical literature, particularly in preterm infants and critically ill patients. Common, mild side effects are uncommon but can include bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea when you first start.
Bifidobacterium longum is rated possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation, though data are limited; no pregnancy or lactation safety data are on file for the other ingredients we checked. Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
