What’s inside
Full disclosure
SAMe 200 mg contains one active ingredient: S-Adenosyl-L-Methionine bisulfate tosylate, commonly called SAMe. It's a compound your body makes naturally and uses in many chemical reactions, including ones that affect your mood, joints, and liver function.
The tablet also contains several inactive ingredients — dicalcium phosphate, riboflavin, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, stearic acid, magnesium stearate, silicon dioxide, HPMC, and titanium dioxide — which help hold the tablet together and make it easier to swallow.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
SAMe is likely effective for osteoarthritis, meaning research supports its use to help with joint pain and stiffness. For depression, the evidence suggests it may help, though it's not as conclusive as we'd like — we call that possibly effective.
There's also some evidence it may help with cholestasis (a liver condition involving slowed bile flow) and possibly ADHD, though the data is weaker. For Alzheimer's disease, we don't have enough reliable evidence yet to say whether it works.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
SAMe is generally well tolerated at typical doses, though side effects become more common at higher doses. The most frequent ones are stomach-related: nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and indigestion.
You might also notice dizziness, headache, insomnia, dry mouth, or sweating. A small number of people report rash, itching, or temporary hair loss.
One important caution: SAMe can trigger mania in people with bipolar disorder, so if you have that condition, check with your doctor before starting it. Safety isn't well established in pregnancy and lactation — there isn't enough data to know whether it's safe.
Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using it if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your pharmacist before taking this if you use serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, some pain relievers, and others that affect serotonin) or levodopa for Parkinson's disease. Both are Moderate-severity concerns.
The interaction checker below can help you verify your specific medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
SAMe may be worth considering if you have osteoarthritis or depression and want to explore a natural option, but you'll want to clear it with your doctor or pharmacist first — especially if you take antidepressants, pain medications, or Parkinson's drugs. If you have bipolar disorder, avoid it unless your doctor approves.

Formula
SAMe (S-adenosyl methionine), a compound native to the body, is a critical component of many biochemical reactions, including those that affect brain biochemistry and joint health. SAMe is critical for the synthesis of neurotransmitters, is important for energy production in the brain, contributes to the maintenance of healthy cell membrane function, and influences cartilage metabolism. Best Naturals SAMe is enteric-coated, which makes it very well tolerated and protects it from degradation.

SAMe 200 mg by Best Naturals Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
SAMe 200 mg by Best Naturals does interact with certain medications.
The main concern is with serotonergic drugs — medications that work on serotonin in your brain, like many antidepressants and some pain relievers. Taking SAMe alongside these can raise the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially serious condition where serotonin levels climb too high, causing agitation, confusion, rapid heartbeat, and muscle rigidity.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
SAMe can also make levodopa (a Parkinson's medication) less effective at controlling symptoms. This happens because SAMe changes how your body processes levodopa.
Altogether, these interactions span 189 individual medications. If you take any prescription drug — especially for depression, anxiety, chronic pain, or Parkinson's disease — run it through the checker below or talk with your pharmacist before you start this supplement.

SAMe
Levodopa
SAMe might reduce the effectiveness of levodopa.
SAMe methylates levodopa, which might reduce its effectiveness for treating Parkinson disease.
Serotonergic Drugs
Taking SAMe with serotonergic drugs might increase the risk of serotonin syndrome and other serotonergic side effects.
SAMe has serotonergic effects. Theoretically, combining serotonergic drugs with SAMe might increase the risk of serotonergic side effects, including serotonin syndrome and cerebral vasoconstrictive disorders. In one case report, SAMe 100 mg intramuscularly was given daily with clomipramine (Anafranil) 25 mg per day. When the clomipramine dose was increased to 75 mg per day the patient experienced serotonin syndrome about 48-72 hours later, requiring hospitalization.
