Why this applies to Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine

Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group 1,3-dmaa interacts with.

1,3-DMAA strongly inhibits cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymes in vitro. Theoretically, 1,3-DMAA can increase levels of CYP2D6 substrates. Some of drugs that are CYP2D6 substrates include amitriptyline (Elavil), clozapine (Clozaril), codeine, desipramine (Norpramin), donepezil (Aricept), fentanyl (Duragesic), flecainide (Tambocor), fluoxetine (Prozac), meperidine (Demerol), methadone (Dolophine), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), olanzapine (Zyprexa), ondansetron (Zofran), tramadol (Ultram), trazodone (Desyrel), and others.

Here is the tricky part with this combo. Your medicine pairs hydrocodone (a cough and pain ingredient) with pseudoephedrine (a decongestant). Hydrocodone is partly turned into a stronger painkiller by the CYP2D6 enzyme. Lab studies suggest DMAA may block that enzyme, so in theory hydrocodone could behave a little unpredictably, and other CYP2D6 drugs you take could build up. Keep in mind this is only test-tube evidence, not proven in people.

The bigger worry is simpler. DMAA is a banned, risky stimulant, and pseudoephedrine is also a stimulant. Together they can really push up your blood pressure and heart rate, cause palpitations, headache, and anxiety. Please skip DMAA and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Hydrocodone, Pseudoephedrine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

1,3-DMAA is thought to have stimulant effects. There is concern that taking 1,3-DMAA with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. Some preliminary research shows that taking 1,3-DMAA 50 mg daily in combination with caffeine 250 mg daily does not increase respiratory rate, blood pressure, or other cardiovascular outcomes compared to taking caffeine alone in healthy men. However, a number of cardiovascular side effects have been reported for patients taking 1,3-DMAA in combination with other stimulants including caffeine. Theoretically, combining 1,3-DMAA with stimulant drugs might increase the risk of adverse cardiovascular effects. Some stimulant drugs include amphetamine, caffeine, diethylpropion (Tenuate), methylphenidate, phentermine (Ionamin), pseudoephedrine (Sudafed, others), and many others.

The combination products like Rezira contain pseudoephedrine, which is itself a stimulant that revs up your 'fight or flight' system. DMAA does the same thing, so stacking the two means you are doubling up on stimulant activity. That can push your blood pressure higher, make your heart race or pound, and leave you feeling jittery, anxious, or unable to sleep. In the worst cases people have had serious heart and blood vessel events with DMAA.

To be fair, this concern is mostly theoretical, based on how these ingredients work rather than strong studies. But DMAA has been banned by the FDA as unsafe regardless, so it is best avoided entirely. The hydrocodone part is a different story (it can cause drowsiness and slow breathing), but it is the pseudoephedrine overlap that matters here. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything like this.
