Why this applies to Hydrocodone

Hydrocodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Aegeline interacts with.

Aegeline inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, aegeline may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use aegeline cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the situation with hydrocodone and aegeline. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down hydrocodone. In test tube studies, aegeline appears to slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let more hydrocodone build up in your system than expected, which might mean stronger effects: more drowsiness, more dizziness, slowed breathing, constipation, or feeling overly sedated.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This is based only on lab data, not real people, so it's a theoretical, minor concern. The bigger worry is aegeline itself, which has been tied to serious liver injury and is best avoided altogether. Please run any supplement past your pharmacist or doctor before combining it with an opioid like hydrocodone.
