Minocycline Hydrochloride falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Alfalfa interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of alfalfa with photosensitizing drugs might have additive effects.
Animal research suggests that excessive doses of alfalfa may increase photosensitivity, possibly due to its chlorophyll content. It is unclear if this effect would be clinically relevant in humans.

Here's the simple version: minocycline already has a well-known tendency to make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you can sunburn faster than usual even on a mild day. Alfalfa contains chlorophyll and other compounds that, at least in animal studies, may also bump up sun sensitivity. Put the two together and the concern is that the effect could stack and you'd burn more easily.

I want to be honest about the strength of this one. It's theoretical, based on pharmacology and animal data, and we don't know if it truly matters in people. Food amounts of alfalfa (like sprouts on a sandwich) are unlikely to be an issue; concentrated supplement doses are the bigger question. Either way, wear sunscreen and a hat while on minocycline, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding alfalfa.

About Minocycline

What Is Minocycline Used For?

Brand names: Ximino, Minolira

Oral and intravenous minocycline products treat many serious bacterial infections, including Rocky Mountain spotted fever, respiratory tract infections, sexually transmitted infections such as lymphogranuloma venereum and nongonococcal urethritis, plague, cholera, brucellosis, tularemia, and others caused by susceptible organisms. MINOCIN Intravenous is used when oral therapy is not adequate or tolerated.

Extended-release oral minocycline tablets are indicated specifically for inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 12 years and older — not for treating infections. AMZEEQ (topical foam) treats inflammatory lesions of moderate to severe acne vulgaris in patients 9 years and older. ZILXI (topical foam) and EMROSI (oral capsule) are indicated for inflammatory lesions of rosacea in adults. ARESTIN (oral powder placed by a dental professional) is used alongside scaling and root planing to reduce pocket depth in adult periodontitis.
