Apple and Rescinnamine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Rescinnamine

Rescinnamine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Apple interacts with.

Consuming apple juice with antihypertensive drugs might interfere with blood pressure control.
Some clinical evidence suggests that consuming apple and cherry juice can increase blood pressure in elderly patients.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence B

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Rescinnamine (Moderil) is an older blood pressure medicine that works by lowering the activity of certain nerve signals, which relaxes your blood vessels and brings your numbers down. The concern here isn't about your liver breaking the drug down. Instead, some clinical research found that drinking apple juice (and cherry juice) actually nudged blood pressure up in older adults. That could quietly work against what your Rescinnamine is trying to do.

This is fairly likely but graded on lower-quality evidence, so don't panic. A regular apple as food is unlikely to be the issue. The bigger worry is drinking a lot of apple juice or using concentrated apple products. If you notice your blood pressure creeping higher, chat with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

This page covers Apple only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Rescinnamine page lists 136 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

By severity: 4 major · 111 moderate · 21 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rescinnamine page

“American hellebore is the entry I would flag first for anyone taking rescinnamine (Moderil). Even small amounts of the herb drop blood pressure sharply and can slow the heart, and rescinnamine is already working to bring pressure down.”

About Apple

What is Apple?

Apple
  • General nutrition and fiber intake
  • Heart and cholesterol health
  • Blood sugar and weight management
  • Digestive regularity
  • Antioxidant support

Apples are a nutritious whole food that provides fiber, vitamins, and antioxidant plant compounds, and eating them regularly fits well into a healthy diet. While research suggests apples may support heart and digestive health, most claims about concentrated apple supplements or extracts are not strongly proven, so enjoy apples as food and talk with your pharmacist before using high-dose products.
