Ashwagandha and Rescinnamine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Rescinnamine

Rescinnamine falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Ashwagandha interacts with.

Theoretically, taking ashwagandha with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research suggests that ashwagandha might lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Theoretically, ashwagandha might have additive effects when used with antihypertensive drugs and increase the risk of hypotension.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Rescinnamine (Moderil) is an older blood pressure medicine that works by lowering the activity of your nerves that tighten blood vessels, so it brings your pressure down. Ashwagandha may gently nudge blood pressure lower too. Put them together and those effects could stack up, meaning your pressure might drop a little more than expected.

If that happens, you could feel lightheaded, dizzy when standing up, tired, or even faint. I want to be honest though: this concern comes mostly from animal research, not solid human studies, so it is more of a theory than a proven problem. Still, it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before adding ashwagandha, and don't change anything on your own.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Rescinnamine page

“American hellebore is the entry I would flag first for anyone taking rescinnamine (Moderil). Even small amounts of the herb drop blood pressure sharply and can slow the heart, and rescinnamine is already working to bring pressure down.”

Ashwagandha
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sleep problems
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Athletic performance
  • General well-being (adaptogen)

Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb most often taken to help with stress, anxiety, and sleep, and some small studies suggest it may help, though the evidence is still limited. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, but it should be avoided in pregnancy and used cautiously by people with thyroid or liver problems. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before starting it.
