Avocado Sugar Extract and Ertugliflozin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Ertugliflozin

Ertugliflozin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Avocado Sugar Extract interacts with.

Theoretically, avocado sugar extract might increase blood glucose levels, and decrease the effects of antidiabetic agents. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: ertugliflozin (Steglatro) works in your kidneys to flush extra sugar out through your urine, helping keep blood sugar down. On paper, avocado sugar extract (which contains a compound called D-mannoheptulose) might nudge blood sugar in the opposite direction, slightly raising it. If that happened, it could partly work against your ertugliflozin and leave your numbers higher than expected.

I want to be honest about the evidence here, though. This concern comes only from lab and animal studies, not from people, so it's very theoretical. Don't change your ertugliflozin or stop the supplement on your own. If you're considering this extract, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your home glucose readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Ertugliflozin page

“Ertugliflozin (Steglatro) works by making your kidneys flush out extra sugar, and nearly all 256 supplements on this page pull on that same lever, so this is a list to approach carefully rather than casually. Most entries either add to the glucose-lowering effect and raise the risk of a low, or, like niacin, push blood sugar the other…”

Avocado sugar extract is a source of D-mannoheptulose, an unusual sugar studied mainly in laboratory and animal research for its possible effects on glucose metabolism. Human evidence is very limited, so it should not be relied on to treat diabetes or any condition. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have blood sugar concerns.
