Avocado Sugar Extract and Sitagliptin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Sitagliptin

Sitagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Avocado Sugar Extract interacts with.

Theoretically, avocado sugar extract might increase blood glucose levels, and decrease the effects of antidiabetic agents. Dose adjustments to diabetes medications might be necessary. Some antidiabetes drugs include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, metformin (Glucophage), pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), and others.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for Januvia (sitagliptin). The concern on file is that avocado sugar extract, in lab and animal studies, may nudge blood sugar upward. Since sitagliptin's whole job is to bring blood sugar down, the worry is that the extract could work against your medication and make it less effective. That could show up as higher readings on your meter despite taking your pills as usual.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though: it's theoretical, based only on test-tube and animal research, not on real people taking both together. So I wouldn't panic. Just don't rely on this supplement to manage diabetes, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding it. If you do try it, watch your blood sugar a bit more closely.

Avocado sugar extract is a source of D-mannoheptulose, an unusual sugar studied mainly in laboratory and animal research for its possible effects on glucose metabolism. Human evidence is very limited, so it should not be relied on to treat diabetes or any condition. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it, especially if you have blood sugar concerns.

About Sitagliptin

What Is Sitagliptin Used For?

Brand names: Januvia, Zituvio

Sitagliptin is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is available as tablets (Januvia, Zituvio, and generic sitagliptin products) and as an oral solution (Brynovin), all approved for this same use.

Sitagliptin is not for type 1 diabetes. It has not been studied in people with a history of pancreatitis, so its safety in that group is unknown.
