Here's the gist: atenolol already works to bring your blood pressure down and slow your heart rate. Baikal skullcap may have a mild blood-pressure-lowering effect of its own, so taking the two together could, in theory, push things a little too low. Think symptoms like feeling dizzy or lightheaded, tired, or faint, especially when you stand up quickly.

I want to be straight with you though: this concern comes from animal and lab studies, not from people, so the real-world risk is uncertain and likely small. Atenolol is not a prodrug, so this isn't about how your body activates the drug, it's just two things that can lower pressure adding up. If you'd like to try the herb, check with your pharmacist or doctor first and keep an eye on your blood pressure.

What Is Atenolol Used For?

Brand names: Tenormin, Atenix

Atenolol tablets are used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina pectoris (chest pain caused by narrowed coronary arteries). Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke and heart attack. Long-term use helps manage chronic chest pain.

Atenolol is also used in hemodynamically stable patients with a definite or suspected acute heart attack (myocardial infarction) to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death. Treatment is started as soon as the patient's condition allows, typically in a hospital setting.
