In vitro and animal research suggests that Baikal skullcap binds to GABA-A receptors and causes sedation. Theoretically, Baikal skullcap might cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects when used concomitantly with drugs with sedative properties. Preliminary clinical research has not identified clinically relevant sedation after use of Baikal skullcap; however, a thorough evaluation of safety outcomes has not been conducted.

Here's the gist with zonisamide and Baikal skullcap. Zonisamide can already make you feel drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or slowed down on its own. In lab and animal studies, Baikal skullcap seems to nudge the same calming brain receptors (GABA-A), so in theory the two stacked together could add up to a bit more sleepiness or trouble concentrating.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. It comes from test-tube and animal work, and early human research hasn't actually shown meaningful sedation from the herb. So this is a theoretical, low-priority concern, not something that commonly causes problems. Still, since seizure control matters, run any new supplement past your pharmacist or doctor first, and notice how you feel.

What Is Zonisamide Used For?

Brand names: Zonegran, Zonisade

Zonisamide is used as add-on therapy — meaning it is combined with other seizure medications, not used alone — to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults with epilepsy. Zonegran (capsule) and generic zonisamide capsules are approved for adults with epilepsy.

Zonisade (oral suspension) is approved as add-on therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and in patients 16 years of age and older.
