Here's the thing to know about the combo of Lortab ASA (which pairs aspirin with the opioid hydrocodone) and bay leaf. The hydrocodone part already slows down your central nervous system, so it can make you sleepy, foggy, or lightheaded, and in higher doses it can slow your breathing. Bay leaf contains a compound called methyl eugenol that, in animal studies, showed mild sedative effects. So in theory, large amounts of bay leaf could add to that drowsiness.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is theoretical and based on lab and animal work, not real human cases. The pinch of bay leaf in your soup is not a concern. The caution is really about concentrated bay leaf supplements or essential oils. If you use those, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

The concern here is theoretical, based on how these ingredients behave in the body rather than real patient reports. The idea is that taking large, concentrated amounts of bay leaf (think supplements or essential oils, not the leaf you toss into a soup) could add to the calming, sedative effects of the narcotic.

If that happened, you might feel extra drowsy, dizzy, foggy, or constipated, and in theory your breathing could slow more than expected.
