Bay Leaf and Insulin determir

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIDIABETES DRUGS

Why this applies to Insulin determir

Insulin determir falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Bay Leaf interacts with.

Concomitant use of bay leaf with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Preliminary clinical research shows that bay leaf can lower blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes who are already taking antidiabetes medication. Advise patients to monitor glucose levels closely. Dose adjustments may be necessary.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Levemir (insulin detemir) already does the heavy lifting of lowering your blood sugar. The idea here is that bay leaf, when taken as a concentrated supplement, may nudge your blood sugar down a little further on its own. Stack that effect on top of your insulin and your numbers could dip lower than you expect, which can lead to hypoglycemia (shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, or a fast heartbeat).

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how bay leaf seems to behave, and the human research is thin. The sprinkle of bay leaf you use in soup or sauce is not the issue. If you're considering a concentrated bay leaf product, check your glucose closely and chat with your pharmacist or doctor first.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Insulin determir page

“Anyone using insulin detemir (Levemir) should treat this list with real caution, because nearly every one of the 242 ingredients on it acts on blood sugar, and most stack extra glucose-lowering on top of the insulin you already inject. Only two carry a major rating, but both deserve understanding first: Siberian cocklebur, which has ca…”
