Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist: this combo product pairs an antihistamine (chlorpheniramine) with a decongestant (phenylephrine). The phenylephrine is the part that acts like a mild stimulant, gently revving up your system to shrink swollen nasal passages. Black tea brings caffeine to the table, which is also a stimulant.

Stack the two together and you may notice the stimulant side effects add up a bit: a faster or pounding heartbeat, feeling jittery or wired, trouble sleeping, or a slight bump in blood pressure. This is mostly a theoretical concern based on expert opinion, and a cup or two of tea is unlikely to cause real trouble for most folks. Still, if you have heart issues or high blood pressure, or you feel uneasy, check with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing them.
