Black Tea and Isoproterenol

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS

Why this applies to Isoproterenol

Isoproterenol falls under BETA-ADRENERGIC AGONISTS — the group Black Tea interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of large amounts of black tea might increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Black tea contains caffeine. Caffeine can increase cardiac inotropic effects of beta-agonists.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence D

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version. Isoproterenol (Isuprel) is a beta-agonist that revs up your heart, making it beat faster and pump harder. Black tea brings caffeine to the table, and caffeine can give the heart a similar little push. Put them together and the worry is that the two stimulating effects could stack up, possibly leading to a faster heartbeat, palpitations, a fluttery or pounding feeling, or jitteriness.

That said, this is a theoretical concern based on how these substances work, not something proven in studies. Also, isoproterenol is usually given in a hospital setting under close monitoring, so your care team is already watching your heart. A cup or two of tea is unlikely to be a big deal, but it's always smart to mention your tea habit to your doctor or pharmacist.

What is Black Tea?

  • Mental alertness and energy
  • Heart health support
  • Blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Digestive complaints
  • Weight management
  • Antioxidant support

Black tea is a popular caffeinated drink made from the fully oxidized leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, and it contains caffeine and antioxidant plant compounds. Moderate tea drinking is generally safe for most adults and may modestly support heart health and alertness, but it is not a proven treatment for any disease. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, sensitive to caffeine, or taking medicines, talk to your pharmacist or doctor.
