Black Tea and Tiagabine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Minor

TIAGABINE (Gabitril)

Theoretically, black tea might increase the levels and adverse effects of tiagabine.
Black tea contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that chronic caffeine administration can increase the serum concentrations of tiagabine. However, concomitant use does not seem to reduce the antiepileptic effects of tiagabine.
Severity Minor Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

If you take tiagabine (Gabitril) for partial seizures, here's the short version on black tea. The caffeine in tea may, in theory, nudge your tiagabine levels a little higher. The catch is that this idea comes only from animal research, so we don't really know if it plays out the same way in people.

Practically speaking, if levels did rise, you might notice more of tiagabine's usual side effects, things like dizziness, drowsiness, feeling shaky, or trouble concentrating. Good news: the same research suggested tea doesn't seem to weaken how well tiagabine controls seizures. A casual cup or two probably isn't a big deal, but if you drink a lot of tea or take caffeine pills, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.
