Perphenazine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Boxwood interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that boxwood extract can inhibit acetylcholinesterase activity. Theoretically, concurrent use of anticholinergic drugs and boxwood might decrease the effectiveness of boxwood or the anticholinergic agent.

Here's the gist for perphenazine (Trilafon). Part of how this medicine works, and part of why it can cause side effects, comes from its anticholinergic activity, meaning it dampens a brain and body signal carried by acetylcholine. Boxwood pulls in the opposite direction. In lab dish studies, boxwood extract blocked the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, which would leave more of that signal around. In theory, that tug-of-war could blunt perphenazine's effect a bit or work against the boxwood itself.

I'll be honest with you though: this is theoretical and comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. The bigger concern is that boxwood itself is toxic and poorly studied. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

Perphenazine tablets are approved to treat schizophrenia in adults. They are also used to control severe nausea and vomiting in adults when other measures are not enough.

Perphenazine has not been shown effective for managing behavioral problems in patients with intellectual disabilities, and it is not approved for dementia-related psychosis in elderly patients.
