Cannabidiol (cbd) and Belladonna Extract, Phenobarbital

These two interact in 4 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 4 Interactions?

Cannabidiol (cbd) interacts with whole categories of medication. Belladonna Extract, Phenobarbital falls into 4 of those categories, so it can interact with Cannabidiol (cbd) in 4 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

1 of 4

Why this applies to Belladonna Extract, Phenobarbital

Belladonna Extract, Phenobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Cannabidiol (cbd) interacts with.

Theoretically, cannabidiol might have additive effects if used with other CNS depressants.
Preliminary clinical research, case reports, and animal studies suggest that high dose cannabidiol has sedative and hypnotic effects. Theoretically, concomitant use of cannabidiol with drugs with sedative and anesthetic properties may cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

The piece of your Belap to keep an eye on here is the phenobarbital, a barbiturate that calms the nervous system. CBD can have its own mild sedating effect, so layering the two together may add up. In plain terms, you could feel more drowsy, foggy, dizzy, or unsteady than you would from the medicine alone, and that can make driving or moving around the house riskier.

I'll be honest that this concern is mostly theoretical, drawn from how these things behave rather than strong human studies, and it tends to matter more with higher CBD doses. Phenobarbital is a long-acting drug with a narrow safe range, so even small shifts deserve respect. Please loop in your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) INDUCERS

Belladonna Extract, Phenobarbital also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) INDUCERS.

Theoretically, CYP2C19 inducers might decrease cannabidiol levels.

Here's the thing to notice with this pair: it's the phenobarbital in your Belap that may affect your CBD, not the other way around. Phenobarbital is a strong revver-upper of liver enzymes, including the one called CYP2C19 that helps process CBD. So over time, phenobarbital can speed up how fast your body clears CBD, which may leave you with lower CBD levels and a weaker effect than you'd expect.

This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs behave, not something proven in studies, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Your phenobarbital itself shouldn't become less effective. Still, if you're using CBD for a real reason and feel it isn't working, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) INDUCERS

Here's the key thing to know: this interaction works on the CBD, not the other way around. Phenobarbital is a well-known liver enzyme booster (it speeds up the CYP3A4 system). Since your body clears CBD using that same pathway, taking phenobarbital could make your body break CBD down faster, leaving less of it around. In plain terms, your CBD may simply not work as well as you'd expect.

I'll be honest, this is a theoretical concern based on how these drugs behave, not something proven in real patients, so I don't want to alarm you. Phenobarbital is also a serious medicine you should never adjust on your own. Before adding CBD, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

CYTOCHROME P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) SUBSTRATES

4 of 4

Belladonna Extract, Phenobarbital also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, cannabidiol might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2B6.
In vitro research shows that cannabidiol inhibits CYP2B6. However, this interaction has yet to be reported in humans. Until more is known, use with caution. Theoretically, concomitant use of cannabidiol with CYP2B6 substrates might increase the risk for adverse effects from these substrates.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about combining CBD with Belap (which contains phenobarbital). The phenobarbital part is partly broken down by a liver enzyme called CYP2B6, and lab studies suggest CBD can slow that enzyme down. In theory, that could let phenobarbital build up a bit more than usual, nudging up its sedating side effects like extra drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest with you: this is a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, not something that has actually been documented in people. Still, phenobarbital is a sensitive medicine where small shifts can matter, so I'd loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding any CBD product, and don't change your dose on your own.
