Cannabidiol (cbd) and Gabapentin

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CNS DEPRESSANTS

Why this applies to Gabapentin

Gabapentin falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Cannabidiol (cbd) interacts with.

Theoretically, cannabidiol might have additive effects if used with other CNS depressants.
Preliminary clinical research, case reports, and animal studies suggest that high dose cannabidiol has sedative and hypnotic effects. Theoretically, concomitant use of cannabidiol with drugs with sedative and anesthetic properties may cause additive therapeutic and adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: both CBD and gabapentin can have a calming, sleepy effect on the brain. When you use them together, those effects can stack up. So you might feel more drowsy, dizzy, or foggy than you would with either one alone, and some people notice slowed thinking or poor balance, which raises the risk of a fall.

I want to be honest about the strength of this concern. It's based mostly on how these substances work and some early reports, not strong studies, and higher CBD doses are more likely to matter than tiny amounts. CBD does not block or boost how gabapentin is cleared, so this is about overlapping sedation, not a change in drug levels. Don't stop or change anything on your own. Just check with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you drive or already feel tired on gabapentin.

“Gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise) calms overactive nerves, which means it already slows your nervous system down, and that is exactly what 78 of the 106 supplements on this list also do. So the dominant risk here is sedation stacked on sedation, extra drowsiness at best and dangerously slowed breathing at worst, and with seven entries ra…”
