Chrysin and Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Chrysin interacts with whole categories of medication. Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Chrysin in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Minor).

Minor

CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

1 of 2

Why this applies to Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine

Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Chrysin interacts with.

Theoretically, chrysin might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research suggests that chrysin inhibits CYP1A2 isozymes. However, chrysin does not appear to inhibit CYP1A2-dependent caffeine metabolism in animals. Due to chrysin's low bioavailability and rapid metabolism to glucuronide and sulfate conjugates, this interaction is unlikely.
Severity Minor Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist for your headache combo (Esgic Plus, Fioricet-type pills). One ingredient, the caffeine, is cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In test-tube studies, chrysin can slow that same enzyme down. If that happened in real life, caffeine might hang around a bit longer, which could mean more jitteriness, a racing heart, or trouble sleeping. The acetaminophen and butalbital parts aren't really the concern here.

The reassuring part: this is only a theoretical, lab-based finding. Chrysin is barely absorbed by the body and breaks down fast, and in animal studies it did not actually change caffeine's breakdown. So a meaningful interaction is unlikely. Still, if you plan to take both, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS

2 of 2

Acetaminophen, Butalbital, Caffeine also falls under GLUCURONIDATED DRUGS.

Theoretically, chrysin might increase the clearance of drugs that are UGT1A1 substrates, thereby reducing their effectiveness.
In vitro research suggests that chrysin might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1).

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the short version for your headache combo (Tecnal, Esgic Plus, and similar): part of the acetaminophen in this medication gets cleared by a liver enzyme called UGT1A1. In test-tube studies only, chrysin seemed to speed that enzyme up a little. In theory, that could clear the acetaminophen portion a touch faster and make it slightly less effective at easing your tension headache. None of the butalbital or caffeine parts are really involved here.

Honestly, this is very weak evidence, based on lab dishes rather than people, and it's rated as a minor, unlikely interaction. Chrysin is also poorly absorbed, so most folks won't notice anything. Still, before you pair it with this med, run it by your pharmacist or doctor so it fits your full picture.

About Chrysin

What is Chrysin?

  • Bodybuilding and testosterone support
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Antioxidant support
  • Prostate health

Chrysin is a plant flavonoid sold mainly as a bodybuilding supplement claimed to raise testosterone or block estrogen, but human studies have not shown these benefits, largely because the body absorbs very little of it. Evidence for its other proposed uses is mostly limited to laboratory and animal research, so its real-world value is unclear. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using it.

About Acetaminophen, Butalbital, and Caffeine

What Is Acetaminophen, Butalbital, and Caffeine Used For?

Brand names: Tecnal, Esgic Plus, Fiogesic, Triad, Repan, Esgic, Fioricet

This three-ingredient combination — butalbital, acetaminophen, and caffeine — is used to relieve the symptoms of tension headache (also called muscle contraction headache). All supported products, including tablets, capsules, and oral solution, share this same approved use.

It is worth knowing that evidence for using this combination to treat repeated, frequent tension headaches over time is limited. Because butalbital can be habit-forming, extended or repeated use is not recommended.
