Why this applies to Diazepam

Diazepam falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Chrysin interacts with.

Theoretically, chrysin might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
In vitro research suggests that chrysin inhibits CYP1A2 isozymes. However, chrysin does not appear to inhibit CYP1A2-dependent caffeine metabolism in animals. Due to chrysin's low bioavailability and rapid metabolism to glucuronide and sulfate conjugates, this interaction is unlikely.

Here's the short version on pairing chrysin with diazepam (Valium). In test-tube studies, chrysin can gently block an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one of the helpers your liver uses to clear diazepam. If that enzyme slowed down, diazepam could in theory linger a bit longer and lead to more of its usual effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy. Diazepam is an active drug (not a prodrug), so more lingering means a stronger calming effect, not a weaker one.

The reassuring part: this is rated minor and unlikely. The evidence is only lab-based, and your body barely absorbs chrysin, so real-world impact is probably tiny. Still, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Theoretically, chrysin might increase the clearance of drugs that are UGT1A1 substrates, thereby reducing their effectiveness.
In vitro research suggests that chrysin might induce UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A1 (UGT1A1).

Here's the gist for Valium (diazepam). Chrysin has been shown, in test-tube studies only, to possibly speed up an enzyme called UGT1A1 that helps your body clear certain medications. If that happened with diazepam, it could theoretically lower the drug level a bit, meaning less of the calming effect you're counting on for anxiety, muscle spasms, or seizures.

Honestly though, I wouldn't lose sleep over this one. Diazepam is mainly broken down by other liver enzymes (the CYP system), not chiefly by UGT1A1, and this is just lab data with no real human evidence. On top of that, the body absorbs very little chrysin. Diazepam is not a prodrug, so no flipping to worry about. Still, since seizures and muscle conditions are serious, check with your pharmacist before combining them.

What Is Diazepam Used For?

  • Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
