Amiloride, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the simple version: the hydrochlorothiazide part of your water pill can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster than usual. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab studies, may also nudge skin toward being sun-sensitive. Put them together and, in theory, you could be a bit more prone to burning or a sun rash.

I want to be honest about the strength of this: it's theoretical, based on test-tube research, not real patient reports. The cilantro you sprinkle on tacos or salsa is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are a different story. To stay safe, use sunscreen and cover up outdoors, and check with your pharmacist before starting any cilantro supplement.

About Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide

What Is Amiloride and Hydrochlorothiazide Used For?

Brand names: Moduretic, Amilzide, Moduret 25, Amil-Co

Amiloride hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide tablets are used for patients with high blood pressure (hypertension) or congestive heart failure who tend to develop low potassium (hypokalemia) when taking a thiazide or other diuretic alone — or for whom keeping potassium levels in a normal range is especially important, such as people taking digoxin or those with significant heart rhythm problems.

The tablets may be used on their own or alongside other blood pressure medicines, such as methyldopa or beta blockers. This combination product is not intended as the first-choice treatment for swelling (edema) or high blood pressure unless low potassium is a specific concern.
