Flutamide falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the simple version: flutamide can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster than you'd expect. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab tests, also seems to make skin more sun-sensitive. Put the two together and the worry is that this sun sensitivity could add up, leaving you more prone to a burn or rash on exposed skin.

That said, this is a theoretical concern based only on lab research, not real patient reports. The everyday amount of cilantro on your tacos or in salsa is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are a different story. Either way, good sun habits (sunscreen, hat, shade) matter while you're on flutamide. Check with your pharmacist if you're considering a cilantro supplement.

What Is Flutamide Used For?

Brand names: Eulexin, Euflex

Eulexin (flutamide) capsules are used to treat prostate cancer in men. They are always used together with an LHRH agonist (a hormone-lowering injection), never alone.

Eulexin is indicated for two stages of prostate cancer: locally confined Stage B2-C prostate cancer (used alongside goserelin acetate and radiation therapy, starting eight weeks before radiation begins) and Stage D2 metastatic prostate cancer (cancer that has spread beyond the prostate, taken with an LHRH agonist until the disease progresses).
