Maprotiline falls under PHOTOSENSITIZING DRUGS — the group Cilantro interacts with.

Evidence from in vitro research suggests that coriandrin, a constituent of cilantro, has photosensitizing effects. Theoretically, concomitant use with photosensitizing drugs might increase photosensitivity. Some drugs that cause photosensitivity include amitriptyline (Elavil), quinolones (Ciprofloxacin, others), sulfa drugs (Septra, Bactrim, others), and tetracycline.

Here's the gist for cilantro and maprotiline (Ludiomil). Maprotiline can already make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so you may sunburn faster or break out in a rash with less sun than usual. Cilantro contains a compound called coriandrin that, in lab studies, also seems to make skin react more to light. Put together, the worry is that the two could add up and make your skin even more sun-sensitive.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this is theoretical, based on test-tube research, not real patient reports. Eating cilantro as a food is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated cilantro supplements or essential oil are a bigger unknown. Either way, wearing sunscreen and a hat is smart on maprotiline. Check with your pharmacist before starting cilantro supplements.

  • Maprotiline is used to treat depression, bipolar disorder (manic depressive disorder; a disease that causes episodes of depression, episodes of mania, and other abnormal moods), and anxiety. Maprotiline is in a class of medications called tetracyclic antidepressants. It works by increasing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain that are needed to maintain mental balance.
