Here's the heart of it: pimozide (Orap) is already one of the medications most likely to stretch out the heart's electrical recovery time, what we call the QT interval. Cinchona bark naturally contains quinine and quinidine, and both of those do the very same thing. Stack them together and the effects can add up, which in rare cases can trigger a dangerous irregular heartbeat.

This warning is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than reports of it happening with this exact pair, so I don't want you to panic. But because pimozide is unusually sensitive on the QT front, I'd treat this combination with real caution. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing cinchona with your pimozide rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

Cinchona bark is the natural source of quinine and has been used for centuries to treat malaria and fever, but the bark itself is not standardized and can be unpredictable and risky. What Is Pimozide Used For?

Brand name: Orap

Pimozide tablets are used to suppress motor tics (involuntary movements) and phonic tics (involuntary sounds or words) in people with Tourette's Disorder. It is reserved for patients whose daily life or development is severely affected by their tics — it is not intended as a first-line treatment, and it is not used for tics that are mild or mainly cosmetic concerns.

Pimozide is not meant for tics caused by other conditions or medications, and it should not be used for simple tics unrelated to Tourette's Disorder.
