Metronidazole falls under QT INTERVAL-PROLONGING DRUGS — the group Cinchona interacts with.

Theoretically, taking cinchona with other QT interval-prolonging drugs might cause an additive effect and increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias.
Quinidine and quinine, which are constituents of cinchona, prolong the QT interval.

Here's the concern with pairing cinchona and metronidazole (Flagyl). Cinchona bark naturally contains quinine and quinidine, and both of those can stretch out a part of your heartbeat called the QT interval. Metronidazole can nudge the QT interval in that same direction too. So the worry isn't that one changes how the other is broken down, it's that stacking two QT-affecting substances could add up and, in rare cases, trigger an irregular heart rhythm.

I want to be honest about the evidence: this one is theoretical, based on how these compounds behave rather than lots of real-world reports. For most people it likely won't cause trouble, but the risk goes up if you have a known heart rhythm problem, low potassium or magnesium, or take other QT drugs. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Metronidazole treats three main types of infections. It's used for trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted parasitic infection), amebiasis (an intestinal or liver infection caused by a parasite), and serious anaerobic bacterial infections — infections caused by bacteria that thrive without oxygen, which can affect the abdomen, skin, bones, lungs, and other areas.

Because sexual partners can pass trichomoniasis back and forth, both partners are typically treated at the same time, even if one has no symptoms.
