ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS
Why this applies to Benzthiazide
Benzthiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Coconut Water interacts with.
Preliminary clinical research shows that drinking coconut water might lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Benzthiazide (Exna) is a thiazide-type water pill that lowers blood pressure and helps your body shed extra fluid. Coconut water has its own mild blood-pressure-lowering effect, so pairing the two could, in theory, push your pressure down a little more than expected. That might leave you feeling lightheaded, dizzy, or wobbly when you stand up quickly.
Keep in mind this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not a strong proven danger, and an occasional glass with a meal is unlikely to cause trouble. One extra wrinkle: thiazides can sometimes raise potassium handling concerns alongside other meds, and coconut water carries potassium, so it is worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before drinking it regularly.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Benzthiazide page
“Benzthiazide (Exna), a thiazide water pill prescribed for high blood pressure and fluid retention, comes with a supplement list I would treat with genuine respect. Most of what appears here either drops blood pressure further than intended or deepens the potassium and fluid loss the drug already causes, and a handful can strain the kid…”

About Coconut Water
What is Coconut Water?
- Hydration
- Rehydration after exercise
- Electrolyte replacement
- General wellness drink
- Blood pressure support
Coconut water is a natural drink rich in potassium and other electrolytes that many people use for hydration, especially around exercise. For most healthy people it is a safe, tasty beverage, but it is not a proven medicine and should not replace medical electrolyte solutions for serious dehydration. People with kidney disease or those on potassium-affecting medicines should check with their pharmacist or doctor first.

Natural Medicines records Benzthiazide as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Coconut Water — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
