Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Quinethazone (Hydromox) is a thiazide-type water pill that lowers blood pressure and helps your body get rid of extra fluid. Here's the wrinkle worth knowing: coconut water may nudge your blood pressure down a little on its own, so pairing the two could add up to a bigger drop than you expect. That might leave you feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or wobbly when you stand up.

To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how each one works, not strong proof, and an occasional glass with a meal usually isn't a big deal. One extra thing to keep in mind: this diuretic can lower your potassium, and coconut water adds some back, which isn't necessarily bad. Still, chat with your pharmacist or doctor before making it a daily habit.

About Coconut Water

What is Coconut Water?

Coconut Water
  • Hydration
  • Rehydration after exercise
  • Electrolyte replacement
  • General wellness drink
  • Blood pressure support

Coconut water is a natural drink rich in potassium and other electrolytes that many people use for hydration, especially around exercise. For most healthy people it is a safe, tasty beverage, but it is not a proven medicine and should not replace medical electrolyte solutions for serious dehydration. People with kidney disease or those on potassium-affecting medicines should check with their pharmacist or doctor first.
