Trihexyphenidyl falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Datura Wrightii interacts with.

Datura wrightii contains atropine and scopolamine, as well as other tropane alkaloids with anticholinergic activity. Concomitant use of Datura wrightii with anticholinergic drugs might increase anticholinergic effects and adverse effects. Some anticholinergic drugs include amantadine, atropine, belladonna alkaloids, phenothiazines, scopolamine, and tricyclic antidepressants.

Here's the simple version: trihexyphenidyl (Artane) already works by blocking acetylcholine, the same nerve signal that Datura wrightii blocks with its atropine and scopolamine. So you'd be stacking two anticholinergic effects on top of each other, and that can really pile up. Think dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, a racing heart, and especially confusion or hallucinations. In older adults that mental fog can get serious fast.

I want to be straight with you on two things. This warning is based on how these drugs work rather than on hard human studies, so it's a reasonable concern, not a proven event. More importantly, Datura wrightii is genuinely poisonous and we strongly advise against using it at all, with or without your medication. Please talk with your doctor or pharmacist before mixing anything new with your trihexyphenidyl.

What Is Trihexyphenidyl Used For?

Brand names: Artane, Trihex, Artane Sequels

Trihexyphenidyl is used as part of treatment for all forms of parkinsonism — including idiopathic (the most common type), postencephalitic (following a brain infection), and arteriosclerotic parkinsonism. It is often added alongside levodopa when levodopa alone isn't fully controlling symptoms.

It is also used to control extrapyramidal reactions (involuntary movement problems) that can be caused by certain psychiatric drugs, including phenothiazines, thioxanthenes, butyrophenones, and dibenzoxazepines.
