Amantadine falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Datura Wrightii interacts with.

Datura wrightii contains atropine and scopolamine, as well as other tropane alkaloids with anticholinergic activity. Concomitant use of Datura wrightii with anticholinergic drugs might increase anticholinergic effects and adverse effects. Some anticholinergic drugs include amantadine, atropine, belladonna alkaloids, phenothiazines, scopolamine, and tricyclic antidepressants.

Here's the simple version: amantadine already has its own mild drying, anticholinergic-type effects. Datura wrightii is loaded with atropine and scopolamine, which work the same way by blocking acetylcholine in your body. Stack the two and those effects can pile up, so you'd be more likely to see dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, trouble urinating, a fast heartbeat, and confusion or hallucinations. In older folks especially, that confusion can come on fast.

I'll be honest, this concern is based on how these two work together rather than hard human studies, so it's more of a logical caution than a proven event. But Datura is genuinely poisonous, so I'd steer clear of it entirely. Please talk with your pharmacist or doctor before mixing anything new with your amantadine.

What Is Amantadine Used For?

Brand names: Symmetrel, Gocovri, Osmolex ER

Amantadine capsules, tablets, and oral solution are used to prevent or treat uncomplicated respiratory illness caused by influenza A virus strains. They are also used in the treatment of parkinsonism and drug-induced extrapyramidal reactions (movement problems caused by certain medications).

Gocovri (an extended-release amantadine capsule) has two specific approved uses: treating dyskinesia (uncontrolled, involuntary movements) in people with Parkinson's disease who are taking levodopa-based therapy, and as an add-on treatment to levodopa/carbidopa for people experiencing "off" episodes (periods when Parkinson's symptoms return or worsen).
