Paliperidone falls under SEIZURE THRESHOLD LOWERING DRUGS — the group Dendrobium interacts with.

The dendrobium constituent dendrobine is reported to have convulsant effects. Theoretically, combining dendrobium with pro-convulsant drugs might increase the risk of seizure. Some drugs that lower the seizure threshold include anesthetics (propofol, others), antiarrhythmics (mexiletine), antibiotics (amphotericin, penicillin, cephalosporins, imipenem), antidepressants (bupropion, others), antihistamines (cyproheptadine, others), immunosuppressants (cyclosporine), narcotics (fentanyl, others), stimulants (methylphenidate), theophylline, and others.

Here's the thing to know about pairing Dendrobium with paliperidone (Invega). One of the natural compounds in Dendrobium, called dendrobine, has been reported to act as a convulsant, meaning it may make seizures a little more likely. Paliperidone itself can slightly lower the seizure threshold, which is true of most antipsychotics. So in theory, using the two together could nudge that seizure risk up a bit.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not on real cases in people taking both. For most folks the risk is probably low, but it matters more if you have a history of seizures. Before adding Dendrobium, check in with your pharmacist or doctor so they can weigh it for your situation.

What Is Paliperidone Used For?

Brand name: Invega

Paliperidone treats schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. The extended-release tablets (Invega and generic paliperidone) are approved for schizophrenia in adults and adolescents ages 12–17, and for schizoaffective disorder in adults.

Several injectable formulations are also available, each with specific roles. Invega Sustenna and Erzofri extended-release are once-monthly injections approved for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder in adults. Invega Trinza is a once-every-3-month injection for schizophrenia in adults who have already been stabilized on a once-monthly paliperidone palmitate injection for at least four months. Invega Hafyera is a once-every-6-month injection for schizophrenia in adults already stabilized on a once-monthly or every-3-month paliperidone palmitate injection.
