Here's the thing about pairing DHEA with Duavee (your conjugated estrogens plus bazedoxifene): there's some early lab-based hint that DHEA might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways that helps clear bazedoxifene from your body. If that enzyme runs slower, the medication could linger a bit longer and build up, possibly nudging up side effects like breast tenderness, nausea, leg cramps, or fluid retention.

I want to be honest with you, though: this is theoretical and based only on anecdotal evidence, so we really don't know if it matters in real life. On top of that, DHEA is itself a hormone your body turns into estrogen and testosterone, which is worth flagging when you're already on estrogen therapy. Please run this by your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

DHEA is a precursor to estrogen and androgen and is metabolized into those substances. In clinical research, DHEA supplements increase the levels of these hormones. Also, in clinical research, estrogen-progestin oral contraceptives and conjugated estrogens reduce blood levels of DHEA and DHEA-S. The clinical significance of these findings is unclear.

Here's the simple version: Duavee already gives your body estrogen (plus bazedoxifene to protect your uterine lining). DHEA is a hormone your body can turn into more estrogen and testosterone. So in theory, stacking DHEA on top of Duavee could nudge your estrogen activity a little higher, which might mean more estrogen-type effects like breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, headaches, or spotting.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes from lab and early research, not solid human studies, so the real-world impact is unclear and likely small for most people. Because both involve hormones, and estrogen carries clotting concerns, I'd still loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding DHEA rather than guessing on your own.

What Is Estrogen and Bazedoxifene Used For?

Brand name: Duavee

  • Estrogen and bazedoxifene tablets are used to treat hot flashes (sudden feelings of warmth, especially in the face, neck, and chest) in women who are experiencing menopause (stage of life when menstrual periods become less frequent and stop and women may experience other symptoms and body changes). Estrogen and bazedoxifene tablets are also used to prevent osteoporosis (condition in which the bones become thin and weak and break easily) in women who have undergone menopause. Estrogen is in a class of medications called hormones and bazedoxifene is in a class of medications called estrogen agonist–antagonists. Estrogen works by replacing estrogen that is normally produced by the body. Bazedoxifene is used to block the action of estrogen on the lining of the uterus, decreasing the risk of overgrowth that may lead to cancer.
