Garcinia and Aspirin, Pentazocine

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Aspirin, Pentazocine

Aspirin, Pentazocine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Garcinia interacts with.

Theoretically, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), the main active ingredient in garcinia, might increase the risk of bleeding when used with antiplatelet or anticoagulant drugs.
HCA inhibits platelet aggregation in vitro. The inhibitory effect seems to be greater in platelets extracted from diabetic subjects than non-diabetic subjects.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

The combo pill you're asking about (Talwin Compound) pairs aspirin with the pain reliever pentazocine. The piece that matters here is the aspirin. Aspirin already thins your blood by keeping platelets from clumping together, which is exactly why it helps prevent clots but can also raise bleeding risk.

Garcinia's active compound, HCA, has shown a similar platelet-slowing effect, but only in test-tube studies. So in theory, stacking the two could nudge your bleeding risk a little higher. Realistically that might look like easier bruising, nosebleeds, or a cut that takes longer to stop. This is a theoretical concern, not something proven in people, so don't panic. Still, run it past your pharmacist or doctor before adding garcinia, especially since garcinia's weight-loss benefits are weak anyway.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Pentazocine page

“Talwin Compound pairs pentazocine, an opioid painkiller, with aspirin, and I read its supplement list with more concern than most. The great majority of entries do one of two things: raise the bleeding risk that aspirin already carries, or deepen the sedation pentazocine causes.”

  • Traditional cooking and souring agent

Garcinia is a tropical fruit whose rind contains hydroxycitric acid (HCA), widely marketed for weight loss and appetite control.
