Chlorthalidone falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Theoretically, goldenseal might increase the risk of hypotension when taken with antihypertensive drugs.
Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have hypotensive effects. Also, an analysis of clinical research shows that taking berberine in combination with amlodipine can lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure when compared with amlodipine alone. However, this effect has not been reported with goldenseal.

Here's the gist if you're taking chlorthalidone for blood pressure or fluid buildup and you're curious about goldenseal. Goldenseal contains berberine, and on paper berberine may nudge blood pressure downward on its own. Stack that on top of a water pill that's already lowering your pressure, and in theory the two together could drop it a bit too far.

If that happened, you might feel dizzy, lightheaded, or woozy when you stand up, maybe tired or off-balance. I want to be honest though: this concern comes mostly from animal data and from berberine studies, not from goldenseal itself, so it's more theoretical than proven. Chlorthalidone isn't a prodrug, so nothing flips here. Still, check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them, especially if your pressure already runs low.

What Is Chlorthalidone Used For?

Brand names: Hygroton, Thalitone

Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of serious cardiovascular events, especially strokes and heart attacks. It can be used alone or combined with other blood pressure medicines.

Chlorthalidone is also used as an add-on treatment for edema (fluid buildup) caused by heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and kidney conditions including nephrotic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, and chronic renal failure. Thalitone is additionally indicated for edema associated with heart failure, liver cirrhosis, and renal disease including nephrotic syndrome.
