Why this applies to Lansoprazole

Lansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Goldenseal might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
Most clinical and in vitro research shows that goldenseal inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity and increases serum levels of CYP3A4 substrates, such as midazolam. However, in one small clinical study, goldenseal did not affect the levels of indinavir, a CYP3A4 substrate, in healthy volunteers. This is likely due to the fact that indinavir has a high oral bioavailability, making it an inadequate probe for CYP3A4 interactions and/or that it is primarily metabolized by hepatic CYP3A, while goldenseal has more potential to inhibit intestinal CYP3A enzyme activity. Both goldenseal extract and its isolated constituents berberine and hydrastine inhibit CYP3A, with hydrastine possibly having more inhibitory potential than berberine.

Here's the gist: goldenseal can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the helpers your body uses to break down lansoprazole (Prevacid). When that breakdown slows, a bit more lansoprazole can linger in your system than usual. The good news is that lansoprazole is a fairly forgiving, well-tolerated medicine, so this isn't a high-alarm combination.

If anything, you might notice slightly more of its usual mild side effects, like headache, nausea, diarrhea, or stomach upset. Keep in mind lansoprazole is also handled by another enzyme (CYP2C19), so goldenseal only affects part of the picture. Concentrated goldenseal supplements matter more than a tiny culinary pinch. Before mixing them, just run it past your pharmacist or doctor.

What Is Lansoprazole Used For?

Brand name: Prevacid

Lansoprazole is prescribed for a range of conditions where excess stomach acid is the problem. It treats active stomach and duodenal ulcers (sores in the stomach or upper small intestine), helps heal ulcers caused by NSAID pain relievers, and can reduce the risk of those ulcers coming back.

It's also used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus), and rare conditions where the stomach makes far too much acid — like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. When combined with antibiotics, it helps wipe out H. pylori bacteria that cause recurring ulcers.
