Pentobarbitone is a barbiturate, which means it's a strong sedative that already slows down your brain and nervous system. People feel this as drowsiness, slowed breathing, low blood pressure, and grogginess. The concern here is simple: goldenseal contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine showed mild sedative effects of its own. Stacked on top of a powerful sedative like pentobarbitone, the theory is that you could feel extra sleepy or sluggish.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. This interaction is theoretical, and that calming effect from berberine has not actually been reported in people. Still, because barbiturates are potent and unforgiving, it's worth mentioning to your doctor or pharmacist before adding goldenseal so they can weigh in for your situation.

I want to be honest about how soft this evidence is.
