Why this applies to Ivermectin

Ivermectin falls under P-GLYCOPROTEIN SUBSTRATES — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Theoretically, goldenseal might increase or decrease serum levels of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) substrates.
There is conflicting evidence about the effect of goldenseal on P-gp. In vitro research suggests that berberine, a constituent of goldenseal, modestly inhibits P-gp efflux. Other evidence suggests that berberine induces P-gp. In healthy volunteers, goldenseal modestly increases peak levels of the P-gp substrate digoxin by about 14%. However, it does not seem to affect other pharmacokinetic parameters such as area under the curve (AUC). This suggests that goldenseal is not a potent inhibitor of P-gp-mediated drug efflux. Until more is known, goldenseal should be used cautiously with P-gp substrates.

Here's the quick picture: ivermectin gets shuttled around and out of your body by a transporter called P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Goldenseal, thanks to its berberine, may nudge that transporter, but the research is genuinely mixed. Some lab work shows it mildly blocks P-gp, while other studies show the opposite. In real people, goldenseal bumped a similar drug (digoxin) up by only about 14 percent, which tells us it is not a strong player here.

If goldenseal does slow P-gp a bit, slightly more ivermectin could hang around, possibly meaning more dizziness, nausea, or fatigue. This is mostly theoretical, so don't panic. Still, because this isn't settled, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before pairing the two.

What Is Ivermectin Used For?

Brand names: Stromectol, Mectizan, Sklice, Soolantra

Ivermectin tablets (including Stromectol) are used to treat two parasitic infections: strongyloidiasis (a roundworm infection of the intestinal tract) and onchocerciasis (river blindness, caused by a parasitic worm spread by blackfly bites). These are prescription uses for serious infections.

Topical ivermectin lotion — sold under several names including RID One and Done, Head Lice Treatment Ivermectin Lotion, Scalp Care Lotions, and others — is applied to the scalp to treat head lice. A separate topical ivermectin cream (1%), available as Soolantra and ivermectin cream 1%, is used to treat the inflammatory pimple-like bumps of rosacea.
