Phenobarbital, Sodium Nitrate falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Goldenseal interacts with.

Goldenseal contains berberine. Animal research shows that berberine can have sedative effects. However, this effect has not been reported in humans.

Here's the simple version: phenobarbital is a barbiturate, which means it already slows down your brain and nervous system. It can make you drowsy, foggy, slow to react, and in higher amounts it can slow your breathing. Goldenseal contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine showed some calming, sedative-like effects. So the worry is that stacking the two could add up to extra sleepiness or sluggishness.

Now, the honest part: this concern is theoretical. It's based on lab and animal data, and this added drowsiness has not actually been reported in people. Still, since phenobarbital is potent, I'd play it safe. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them, and watch for unusual grogginess if you do.
