Here's the gist with Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol) and hibiscus tea. In lab dishes, concentrated hibiscus extract has slowed down an enzyme called CYP2C19. If that happened in your body, a medicine cleared by that enzyme could build up a little and have somewhat stronger effects. For Symbicort that might theoretically mean a touch more of the usual side effects, like a fast or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, or shakiness from the formoterol, or throat irritation from the budesonide.

That said, this is purely a theoretical concern from test-tube research, and it has never been reported in real people. A cup of hibiscus tea is very unlikely to matter. If you take concentrated hibiscus supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.

Here's the short version: this concern is mostly theoretical. In lab dish studies, hibiscus extract slowed an enzyme called CYP2D6. The thinking is that if it slows that enzyme, drugs cleared by it could build up a little. With Symbicort, the formoterol portion does lean on CYP2D6 (among other enzymes), so in theory you might see slightly more of formoterol's usual effects, like a faster or pounding heartbeat, jitteriness, or hand tremor.

In real people, this hasn't actually been reported, and the rating here is minor. A cup of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated hibiscus supplements are the bigger question mark. If you notice your heart racing or extra shakiness, mention it to your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

Here's the gist for your Symbicort (budesonide and formoterol). The idea on file is that concentrated hibiscus extract might slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2C9, which could let certain drugs build up a bit. But honestly, this one is very theoretical. It only showed up in a test-tube study, it has never actually been reported in people, and CYP2C9 isn't even the main pathway your inhaler relies on (budesonide is handled mostly by a different enzyme, CYP3A4).

If anything did happen, you might notice slightly more of the usual effects, like a fast heartbeat, jitteriness, or a shaky feeling from the formoterol. Drinking hibiscus tea in normal food amounts is very unlikely to matter. If you take strong hibiscus supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor.
