Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP2C19. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to help clear citalopram. In lab dish studies, hibiscus extract slowed that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, citalopram could clear a bit more slowly and build up slightly, which might mean more of its usual side effects like drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, or feeling jittery. Citalopram can also affect heart rhythm at higher levels, so that's worth keeping in mind.

The important part: this has only been seen in a test tube, never in people, and it's rated minor. A cup of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're using concentrated hibiscus supplements daily, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up.

Here's the short version: in lab dishes (not in real people), hibiscus extract slowed down an enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the pathways your body uses to clear citalopram. If that happened in you, citalopram could build up a bit and you might notice more of its usual effects, like drowsiness, nausea, headache, or feeling jittery. At higher levels, citalopram can also affect heart rhythm (a QT change), so that's worth keeping in mind.

That said, this is purely theoretical and hasn't been seen in humans. A cup or two of hibiscus tea is unlikely to be a problem. I'd be a little more cautious with concentrated hibiscus supplements. If you want to use them regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
