Tizanidine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP1A2. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the connection worth knowing. Your body clears tizanidine mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. In lab (test tube) studies, hibiscus extract appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, tizanidine could hang around longer and hit harder than expected.

What might that feel like? More of tizanidine's usual effects, things like extra drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and lower blood pressure (which could leave you feeling faint when you stand up). Keep in mind this is theoretical, drawn from lab work and never reported in people, so it's rated minor. A cup of hibiscus tea is unlikely to be a problem, but concentrated supplements are less predictable. Since hibiscus and tizanidine both lower blood pressure too, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

What Is Tizanidine Used For?

Brand names: Zanaflex, Ontralfy

Tizanidine — available as tablets, capsules, and as the oral solution Ontralfy — is used to manage spasticity (abnormal muscle stiffness or spasms). Because it works for a relatively short window of time, it is typically scheduled around the activities when spasm relief matters most.

Ontralfy (oral solution) and Zanaflex capsules are specifically indicated for the treatment of spasticity in adults. Other tizanidine tablets and capsules are indicated for the management of spasticity more broadly.
