Zaleplon falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the gist for Zaleplon (Sonata): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this sleep medicine out. Lab studies suggest hibiscus may gently slow that same enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more zaleplon hang around than usual, which might mean stronger effects like extra drowsiness, grogginess, dizziness, or feeling unsteady the next morning.

I want to be honest, though, this is only theoretical. It comes from test-tube work, not from real people, and it's rated as a minor concern. A cup of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause a problem. If you use concentrated hibiscus supplements regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Zaleplon Used For?

Zaleplon capsules are approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia. Specifically, they help reduce the time it takes to fall asleep (sleep onset). Clinical studies showed this benefit for up to 30 days of use.

Zaleplon has not been shown to increase total sleep time or reduce the number of times you wake up during the night. It is intended for short-term use, and if sleep problems continue beyond 7–10 days, a doctor should evaluate you for an underlying cause.
