Zonisamide falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Hibiscus Sabdariffa interacts with.

Theoretically, Hibiscus sabdariffa extract might reduce the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx extract inhibits CYP3A4. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the short version on pairing hibiscus with your zonisamide. Your body partly clears zonisamide using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, concentrated hibiscus extract slowed that enzyme down. In theory, that could let a bit more zonisamide build up in your system, which might bump up its usual side effects like drowsiness, dizziness, trouble concentrating, or loss of appetite.

That said, I want to be honest about how weak this is. This was only seen in a lab dish, never in actual people, and it's rated a minor concern. A cup or two of tart hibiscus tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. If you're thinking about a concentrated hibiscus supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Zonisamide Used For?

Brand names: Zonegran, Zonisade

Zonisamide is used as add-on therapy — meaning it is combined with other seizure medications, not used alone — to treat partial seizures (seizures that start in one part of the brain) in adults with epilepsy. Zonegran (capsule) and generic zonisamide capsules are approved for adults with epilepsy.

Zonisade (oral suspension) is approved as add-on therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and in patients 16 years of age and older.
