Sitagliptin falls under ANTIDIABETES DRUGS — the group Hoodia interacts with.

Animal research shows that a steroid glycoside of hoodia, gordonoside F, increases glucose-stimulated insulin secretion by activating GPR119. This effect enhances glucose disposal. Theoretically, concomitant use of hoodia with antidiabetes medications may enhance blood glucose-lowering effects and increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Some antidiabetes medications include glimepiride (Amaryl), glyburide (DiaBeta, Glynase PresTab, Micronase), insulin, pioglitazone (Actos), rosiglitazone (Avandia), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), glipizide (Glucotrol), tolbutamide (Orinase), and others.

Here's the gist: Hoodia is mainly sold as an appetite suppressant, but lab work in animals suggests one of its compounds (gordonoside F) may nudge the body to release a little more insulin and help clear sugar from the blood. Since sitagliptin (Januvia) already works to lower your blood sugar, pairing the two could, in theory, push your levels lower than you intend.

I want to keep this in perspective. This concern is theoretical and based only on animal research, not human studies, and good evidence that hoodia even works is thin. Still, if you take it, it's smart to watch for signs of low blood sugar like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, or confusion. Before adding hoodia, check with your pharmacist or doctor so they can guide you.

What Is Sitagliptin Used For?

Brand names: Januvia, Zituvio

Sitagliptin is used alongside diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is available as tablets (Januvia, Zituvio, and generic sitagliptin products) and as an oral solution (Brynovin), all approved for this same use.

Sitagliptin is not for type 1 diabetes. It has not been studied in people with a history of pancreatitis, so its safety in that group is unknown.
