Ilex Guayusa and Aspirin, Caffeine

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.

Why Are There 2 Interactions?

Ilex Guayusa interacts with whole categories of medication. Aspirin, Caffeine falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Ilex Guayusa in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

1 of 2

Why this applies to Aspirin, Caffeine

Aspirin, Caffeine falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Ilex Guayusa interacts with.

Theoretically, Ilex guayusa may increase the risk of bleeding if used with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Caffeine is reported to have antiplatelet activity. Theoretically, caffeine in Ilex guayusa might increase the risk of bleeding when used concomitantly with these agents. However, this interaction has not been reported in humans. There is some evidence that caffeinated coffee might increase the fibrinolytic activity in blood.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Unlikely Evidence D

Interaction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans..

Here's an interesting one. Your Anacin product already contains both aspirin (a blood thinner that keeps platelets from clumping) and caffeine. Guayusa tea is itself a caffeine source, so the bigger practical concern is simply stacking caffeine on top of caffeine, which can leave you jittery, restless, with a racing heart or trouble sleeping.

On the bleeding side, the worry is mostly theoretical. Caffeine has some mild platelet-blocking activity in lab settings, so on paper it could nudge aspirin's blood-thinning effect a little. This hasn't actually been shown to cause problems in real people. Still, watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach upset, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing them regularly.

STIMULANT DRUGS

2 of 2

Aspirin, Caffeine also falls under STIMULANT DRUGS.

Theoretically, concomitant use might increase stimulant adverse effects.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Due to the central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of caffeine, concomitant use with stimulant drugs can increase the risk of adverse effects.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Probable Evidence C

Interaction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports..

Here's the simple version: the product you're asking about, Anacin (aspirin plus caffeine), already has caffeine built right into it. Ilex guayusa is basically a caffeinated tea, similar to yerba mate or green tea. So when you put the two together, you're really just stacking caffeine on top of caffeine.

That extra dose can push you into the usual too-much-caffeine territory: a jittery or restless feeling, a racing or pounding heartbeat, trouble sleeping, headache, or an upset stomach (which the aspirin can add to). This is mostly common-sense expert caution, not a dangerous reaction, and a normal cup of tea is unlikely to be a big deal for most folks. Still, if you notice your heart racing or you have heart concerns, check with your pharmacist or doctor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Aspirin, Caffeine page

“Anacin combines aspirin with caffeine, so supplements can hit it from two directions, and a few of the 347 on this list deserve real respect. The biggest group, over 200 ingredients, can raise bleeding risk on top of aspirin's blood-thinning effect; beer and wine carry major ratings because alcohol plus an aspirin-type drug makes stoma…”

About Ilex Guayusa

What is Ilex Guayusa?

  • Energy and alertness
  • Mental focus
  • Antioxidant support
  • Appetite control
  • Athletic and physical performance

Ilex guayusa is a caffeine-containing holly leaf from the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a tea for energy and alertness, much like yerba mate or green tea. There is limited human research confirming specific health benefits, and its main reliable effect comes from its caffeine content. Because it is a stimulant, use it cautiously and check with your pharmacist or doctor if you have heart concerns or are pregnant.
